CNN senior data analyst Harry Enten on Monday sounded stunned by the size of the swing among 18- to 29-year-olds — the voters whose shift toward Donald Trump helped return him to the White House two years ago — and the swing runs deep on the issue behind his comeback: the economy.
“Donald Trump is in big trouble with the youths,” Enten said. “This is a historic shift away from the president of the United States.”
Enten pointed to the “40-point shift away from the president of the United States, in a group that he did historically strong with back in the 2024 election. For a Republican candidate, it is no bueno when you see shifts like this.” Trump’s net approval with voters under 30 now stands at -47 points, Enten wrote on social media.
He noted that with voters under 30 in the 2024 election, Trump beat then-Vice President Kamala Harris on the economy by 11 points. His net approval on the economy with the group now sits at -62 points, a “shift of 73 points away from the president of the United States on the issue that got him re-elected back in 2024,” Enten said.
“It is now the issue that is dragging him down, and maybe dragging down Republicans who are running for re-election as well,” he added.
Trump, who as recently as Monday told voters to “pretend I am on the ballot,” has “terrible, terrible, terrible numbers, with those under the age of 30,” Enten said, and noted that those numbers are “likely to drag Republicans down with them who are running this year for Congress.”
In the 2024 race for Congress, Democrats led by 10 points with voters under 30. Today, Enten said, Democrats lead by 33 points.
Trump’s Approval Hits Lowest Pre-Midterm Mark Since 1990
“This is the week where it felt like the bottom started falling out in earnest,” Republican strategist Colin Reed told The Wall Street Journal. “President Trump is the Republican Party right now, and by virtue of his lower approval ratings, the entire party is dealing with that political reality.”
The paper reported that its latest poll “shows that voters have soured on the president, portending trouble for members of his party in November.”
“Just 37% of Americans approve of the job that Trump is doing, according to the poll, which was conducted earlier this month,” the Journal reported. “It is the lowest approval rating of any president heading into a midterm election in Journal polls dating to 1990.”
What Happens When Allies Try to Tell Trump the Truth?
Some Trump allies have attempted to express to the president just how bad things are for Republicans, according to the Journal.
“But Trump has at times cut off those conversations, according to a person familiar with the matter,” the Journal added, noting that a “senior White House official said that Trump’s political team regularly presents him with candid assessments of the midterm environment and polling.”
Election Day is 36 days away, and early voting has already begun in some states. With Trump’s approval at 37%, according to the Journal, the odds of Trump and the GOP turning public opinion around are slim, and the numbers keep moving in the wrong direction for them.
Trump has told his MAGA base to “cheat like hell.”
The goal for Democrats: win back the House and the Senate by margins no amount of cheating can overcome.
Vote.
