I find it exceptionally aggravating that the NYT is sounding the alarm bells after the fire has been largely contained, all the while having whistled past the graveyard of American democracy for the past 12 years.

Clearly the powers that be at the top of the NYT have enjoyed the immense profiteering that inevitably follows Trump in the media. Naturally yet despicably, the NYT chose to sane wash the insanity, profanity, illegality and cruelty emanating from Trump since 2015 to monetise the weirdness at the expense of our democracy. Now they want us Stupids to believe that their editors, in earnest, are concerned about our Predator of the United States?

Um, no. No way.

Glad I canceled my subscription to NYT and WaPo in 2023.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

The Times' supposed efforts to appear "neutral" come at the cost of hard-hitting journalism that it is more than capable of doing when it feels like it — which, in my opinion, is increasingly rare, at least when it comes to Trump. That said, the Editorial Board's editorial was excellent. Just wish we saw more efforts in the Times like it.

I don’t know your background, but I am a retired journalist. I have a digital sub to NYT. I am centrist in my views. I speak from a critical, professional eye, and from someone who thinks most of my craft has gone to shit. The Times does great work covering this Administration. It reports objectively and aggressively. And it pisses off Trump, hence the “failing NYT” sobriquet.

Its editorial was brilliant because it laid out, almost in bullet point form, the crimes of the past 23 months. I covered six presidents, and have voted across the political spectrum since 1976. Never have I seen such cruelty, incompetence and blatant grift and abuse than I’ve witnessed since 1/25.

Mark, I think you need to do a deeper dive into the actual HEADLINES of the NYT from 2016 straight through to the present. You’ve clearly missed the point of this debate, being that the NYT deliberately misconstrued Trump’s various lies, crimes and sexual obscenities (both physical and verbal) to grab readers’ attention and ignoring the vast influence of its editorial reach.

I’m certain there were more than a few well-versed notions roaming around Greece during the era of Socrates, Plato, Epictetus and the like. But you don’t see their screeds as serious counter influence to the great works of these philosophers.

The most significant role of editing is knowing the value of the message, not just the cost.

NYT cannot credibly claim its trophy of journalism while bamboozling The Stupids about Trump’s “antics”. We see right through it.

I don’t “clearly” miss points of many debates as it relates to my profession. That said, you make the declarative statement that NYT “deliberately misconstrued” Trump’s behavior to grab readers’ attention. How do you know this? Was there an internal memo directing staffers to reframe Trump’s behavior to grab attention? Have you so thoroughly examined headlines over the past 10 years to arrive at your conclusions?

I think the WP, which I also subscribe to, is guilty of soft pedaling headlines and copy. That flows indirectly from Bezos but more directly from a more conservative editorial upper echelon.

I have read and “thoroughly examined” every NYT Trump headline. No need for “staff memos”; those are CYA in all cases.

The NYT business model is to first grab the attention of readers with HEADLINES, then publish what nearly approximates defamatory statements without crossing the line.

NYT gives not one hot damn about truth when it comes to headlines. They will, they won’t, they will, they won’t report the truth.

Their North Star is money. And there are a lot of stupid fools in this country who think they are better informed by reading the NYT.

The American press is a disaster and like Chernobyl, a giant concrete sarcophagus should be placed over the entire industry, never to be touched again.

Came here to say all of this, but far less eloquently. Thank you 🙏

The fact that he wasn't put into a federal supermax in the wake of January 6th signified beyond a shadow of a doubt that the rule of law in this country was over .

Hello, friends! #ICYMI Maggie Haberman’s mommy was Trump’s one-time publicist and I am skeptical about which side Maggie’s really on.

As to the NYT (in general): they put Pres. Biden on page 1 if he mispronounced a word — and “sane washed” Trump’s incoherent rants on page 17. NOW . . . after they helped #DementiaDon regain The White House …. NOW they are with the Democrats.

Oh?

Diane Zzzzz's avatar

Regardless of her parentage, Maggie Haberman is a voice fully and wholly seated in the Democratic Party.

LindaAnn LoSchiavo's avatar

OK. But I still do not trust her.

So why the f*ckery of their sensationalist piece on the Peltola campaign, which I see has been walked back after the primary source recanted her accusations? They jumped on that faster than Hillary’s emails. Just a bit of hypocrisy there…

Gerry Queenan's avatar

Much ,much hypocrisy

Victoria Feldman's avatar

The alleged trickery actually doesn’t make much sense in the general election. I rather think it was intended to try to knock out the incumbent in the primary. I don’t believe the walk back until someone proves to me that the source was a plant or has a history of fantasizing.

Rochelle Williams's avatar

I was commenting on the hypocrisy of the NYT’s pearl-clutching coverage of a ho-hum situation, not any alleged election “trickery.” Thus the reference to NYTs treatment of Hilary’s emails. Someone (and I don’t recall who it was) put out a list of races in which Republicans have recruited various candidates to split the Dem vote or pull votes away from a primary candidate, etc. It’s apparently not illegal, all parties do it (not excusing the stupidity and cupidity of these strategies no matter who employs them) unless bribery is involved, which the Repubs got caught got in a FL race. Just expressing my disgust about the collapse of the fourth estate and journalistic ethics! Re: reliability of the accuser/recanter, I have no opinion.

Hope it reads like impeachment for treason & all of the fascists are jailed!

William Pappas's avatar

The truth is the Times has too frequently normalized or portrayed as legitimate Trump’s bizarre and deeply authoritarian and fascist behavior contributing to the rapid deterioration of our culture, politics and government. It matters not if it occurred in the headlines or reporting. Nearly all mainstream media have been guilty of this. Trump’s obvious intention is nothing less than the complete destruction of our democracy and replacing it with fascist, one man rule unfettered by the constraints of functioning courts, congress or the will of the American people. That fact should underpin and inform all reporting on the Trump Administration.

The media created the Orange tyrant in the pursuit of a constant narrative of controversy that hooked readers and sold copy. He should have been laughed off the stage in 2015

Surprised they'd print this considering their owner. Hummmm - another sign of a possible blue wave perhaps?

Republicans need to be voted out and KEPT OUT for at least 40 years if there is any hope of repairing the damage they have inflicted upon this country the past 46 years. Every rotten policy Saint Ronnie initiated must be revoked and his appointees gone to their great reward.

I love the smell of impeachment in the morning. He’ll fall even lower than Nixon, and WATERGATE will be remembered—after what happens to Trump and his supporters—as a minor incident.

Muse Tutor's avatar

So first- Trump and maga and all republicans REPEATEDLY claim NYTimes is fake news when they publish investigations showing Trump is a pedophiles trump is a grifter. Fraudster. Thief. NYT counts he lies daily 99.9% of every public speaking he does. And all he NYT published polls saying tfumpf is the worst president in history— that is all fake.

But TODAY all maga & TRUMPF proclaims that NYT has done accurate reporting on A Democrat running for Alaska governor and her staff ( now all resigned) to stack the ballot with DAN SULLIVANs. Which is not illegal!!! It is copying what republicans always do!!!

You got this?!? NYT always FAKE NEWS until they expose Democrats copying republicans in stacking Alaska’s ballot ( which still has NOT been proven that is what these Alaskan Dems did)
