Prices are high. Everyone knows this except President Donald Trump.
Trump is just making up numbers here. Inflation never hit 19% — consumer prices peaked at 9.1% in June 2022. Last month, prices rose 3.7% from a year earlier, more than double the 1.7% Trump claims.
On Wednesday, we learned consumer inflation — known as CPI, the prices we pay at the checkout, the pump, and everywhere else — made its biggest monthly jump since April. Gas costs a third more than a year ago, and gas alone drove more than half of September’s increase. On Thursday, we learned wholesale prices — known as PPI, what producers charge for goods and services before those costs reach you — posted their biggest annual gain in nearly four years.
That means the price of groceries, eating out, and new clothes is about to climb even higher than today.
This is Trump’s doing.
CNBC reported Thursday, “there are signs that soaring energy prices are having downstream effects on other categories.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly half of September’s increase in processed goods for intermediate demand traces to rising diesel prices.
Diesel prices have broken records.
“September was the only month in history we've seen an average diesel price over $6 per gallon, and we're likely to break that again in October with average prices currently at $6.287 per gallon,” reported petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan.
Why have diesel prices hit record highs?
“Diesel prices have reached historic highs as a result of the U.S. war in Iran and Russia’s war in Ukraine, and consumers will bear the brunt of the rising cost, experts say,” PBS News reported last month.
Who’s responsible for the U.S. war in Iran?
President Donald Trump.
Who’s responsible for breaking his promise to end Russia’s war in Ukraine “on day one”?
President Donald Trump.
These recent headlines tell the story:

“Wholesale prices hit highest level in 4 years thanks to fuel costs.” (AL.com)
“Get ready for grocery prices to get even more painful.” (Business Insider)
Inflation, grocery prices, gas prices, and diesel prices hit every household budget in America. Democrats should talk about them every hour of every day for the next 19 days, through Election Day.
